At the beginning of 2008 the Max-Reger-Institut in Karlsruhe began working on the Reger-Werkausgabe (RWA); this project is supported by the Academy of Sciences and Literature in Mainz as part of the Academies’ Program. Co-operation partner of the MRI is the Institute for Musicology and Music Computer Sciences at the Hochschule für Musik Karlsruhe.

The RWA is divided into three parts, devoted to the following areas of Max Reger’s output:

  • Organ works (7 volumes)
  • Songs and choral works (10 volumes)
  • Arrangements of works by other composers (11 volumes)

Editorial directors of the RWA are Prof. Dr. Susanne Popp and Prof. Dr. Thomas Seedorf, editors of the individual volumes Dr. Alexander Becker, Dr. Christopher Grafschmidt, Dr. Stefan König and Dr. Stefanie Steiner-Grage.

The RWA as a hybrid edition combines volumes of printed music with digital excerpts. All of the sources (manuscripts, first prints, letters) as well as illustrating documents are made available on DVD, scientifically processed by Edirom software. Their reproduction, annotation and comparison offer all users who want to understand the work from its beginnings or to delve deeper into the compositional working process, numerous insights into Reger’s working processes and into the works themselves.

The encyclopedic portion of the DVD enriches and illuminates the examination of the sources and offers further information and images on the background to the works. This information is both separately retrievable as well as linked to the digital version of the Kritischer Bericht. With this, the new editions of the works are placed in their historical and biographical context, necessary for their proper understanding.
