On Sunday, 10 August, the Max Reger Institute will host the first of this year’s serenade concerts, as usual in the courtyard of the Alte Karlsburg in Durlach (Pfinztalstr. 7). The concert begins at 5:00 pm and features performances by Johannes Hustedt (flute), Egidius Streiff (violin), and Mariana Doughty (viola). On the programme, among others, are serenades by Max Reger (Opus 77a) and Ludwig van Beethoven (Opus 25).

As a tribute to the Karlsruhe composer Wolfgang Rihm, who passed away in 2024, the concert will also include the world premiere of a version of Über die Linie VI authorised by the composer himself. Originally written for alto flute, violin, and cello, this version offers a new interpretation of the work.

Last Saturday, July 27, 2024, the Karlsruhe native, regarded as one of the greatest contemporary composers, passed away after a long, severe illness. Wolfgang Rihm will be remembered not only for his works but also for his understanding and humorous nature, which distinguished him as a person. His steadfast commitment to music, art, and culture will never be forgotten, especially in his hometown, and it will continue to inspire future generations of artists.

Bearbeitung als Original. Funktionen und Ästhetik der Transkription um 1900

Together with the Karlsruhe University of Music, we will host the conference "Bearbeitung als Original. Funktionen und Ästhetik der Transkription um 1900" from October 18-20, 2024. For Max Reger, adaptations played a significant role, among other things, to "modernize" old music. His contemporary and occasional pen pal Ferruccio Busoni, whose 100th death anniversary is being commemorated this year, shared this passion.

As part of the conference, there will be two concerts: on October 18th with the Karlsruhe Ensemble Mikado featuring oboist Petar Hristov; and on October 19th with Prof. Sontraud Speidel and Florian Kleinertz from the Karlsruhe University of Music, as well as the piano duo Prof. Rinko Hama and Prof. Ruben Meliksetian, both former graduates of the Karlsruhe University of Music.

Financing phase started: Max Reger as a graphic novel

Max Reger is impressive. His mind is never at rest, he composes music day and night. He rushes from concert to concert and writes letters incessantly. This is only possible with vast quantities of sausages, beer and cigars. He cracks jokes of all kinds, but the thought of death haunts him. His exuberant music is dazzling, but when the tall, portly man sits down at the piano, everyone is enchanted by his delicate playing.
The Max Reger Institute is working on a graphic novel about Max Reger. Almut Ochsmann is writing the text and scenario, while Eva Gau is responsible for the visual design.

Pristine Audio concludes the Reger year with the recordings of the Violin Concerto (soloist Georg Kulenkampff), the Romantic Suite and the Mozart Variations under the direction of Willem van Oterloo from 1944-1957; the sound restoration of the historical recordings is astonishing. Five miniatures for violin are offered as bonus material - including the earliest ever recording of Reger's music (from June 1915).

First sections of the RWA Encyclopedia on persons/institutions, postal items and work templates are now available.

The new online version of the RWA Encyclopedia has been launched in the Reger Year 2023. From now on, all components of the hybrid RWA edition publications (printed and digital editions as well as encyclopedia) are accessible again. After a rebuilding phase lasting several years, the RWA Encyclopedia appears in a new design, with updated technical underpinnings, consolidated content structure and a functional user interface. The information on the artistic, historical and social environment of Max Reger's edited works, which until 2019 (Volume II/8) had only been included in the respective edition volumes on DVD, will be brought together here in a central location, updated and continuously extended in accordance with the edition's publication plan.

Rudolf Serkin, son-in-law of Adolf Busch, but also member of the board of trustees of Max-Reger-Institute, left a rich discographical legacy, but not too many recordings of works by Reger are available. Because of that we are happy to present, in collaboration with Marlboro Music, a performance of Reger's Klarinettensonate B-Dur op. 107 from the year 1977, along with one of Serkins earliest recording ever, Bach's Goldberg-Variationen, which were recorded in 1928 für for Welte-Mignon reproducing piano. This release documents a playback from Klang Raum Riehen in 2015 which was dedicated to Busch, Serkin and Reger and which was accompanied by an exhibition of Max-Reger-Institute.

Music edition project Reger-Werkausgabe conquers new paths and starts publicating its digital edition's contents through new web service RWA Online.

	www.reger-werkausgabe.de

Together with the publication of the two latest edition volumes Songs II (Volume II/2) and Works for mixed voice unaccompanied choir II (Volume II/9) with Carus-Verlag, Stuttgart, the Reger-Werkausgbe (RWA) launches its new project website RWA online. The RWA thus renews its hybrid edition model and publishes the digital edition components online, centrally, sustainably and freely accessible.

As in the past with the volume-by-volume DVDs, the digital edition parts consist of the accompanying scholarly texts, the digital editions with critical report and a comprehensive digital encyclopaedia (from late 2021) about life and œuvre of Max Reger. With RWA online, the previous boundaries of the double edition volume/DVD become permeable. Users will have a variety of possibilities to embark on extensive digital wanderings through the entire complex of works edited in the RWA and their historical contexts beyond a separate volume context. In addition to being able to follow the progress of the edition project just in time, users always will have access to the current state of research and published material.

	Newly published: Songs II

Volume II/2, published by Carus-Verlag, is now available.

Reger caused a sensation in the music world with his songs written between summer 1889 and spring 1901. The composer, who had consolidated himself personally and artistically after years of serious crisis, displayed a harmonic and melodic uncompromisingness in these songs that challenged, fascinated and irritated performers and audiences alike.

The collections that Reger compiled became more and more extensive: Opera 35 and 37 comprised six and five songs, Opera 43 and 48 eight and seven, Opera 51 and 55 twelve and fifteen songs. In addition, he wrote several individual contributions for publication in the Neue Musik-Zeitung (WoO VII/23-29).

In his search for texts, Reger turned to contemporary poetry. The poems he set to music came from representatives of literary Jugendstil and Impressionism, including Otto Julius Bierbaum, Detlev von Liliencron and Richard Dehmel. Intensity and subtlety of feeling, a claim to inwardness and modern emotional language were Reger’s musical yardsticks. The concentration on the modern declamation song in the wake of Hugo Wolf, to whom Opus 51 is dedicated, corresponded to this.

Furthermore, Reger ventured into texts that Richard Strauss had also previously set to music, finding very different solutions in mood and tonal language.

Out now: Fritz Buschs conducts Music of the 19th century in Copenhagen 1950/1

Works by Franz Schubert, Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy and Gioachino Rossini complement the cooperation of Fritz Busch with Statsradiofoniens symphonic orchestra in Copenhagen - an incomplete interpretation of Schubert's Great C Major Symphony (unfortunately without the finale) is relatively unknown. Additionally you can listen to Mendelssohn Bartholdy's Italian Symphony and Rossini's Overture to the opera Semiramide.

Freshly restored by the label Pristine Audio Giuseppe Verdis La forza del destino was just released - Fritz Buschs last recording from Edinburgh festival in 1951. Since at least the 1920s Busch became an exponent of the Verdi renaissance, last but not least by performing La forza del destino, which premiered in Dresden with a new translation by Franz Werfel in 1926. Arturo Toscanini was specifically traveling to Dresden for this performance, as the opera was staged only very rarely also in Italy.

	Concert on September 10th

The second concert in the inner courtyard of Alte Karlsburg on Thursday, September 10th was also a great success. The trio Aleksandra Manic (violin), Jinhee Kim (viola) and Eyal Heimann (cello) played Streichtriosatz D. 471 by Schubert and Streichtrio d-Moll op. 77b. by Max Reger. The acoustics of the inner courtyard are well suited for concerts in the summer; something our numerous guests could convince themselves of.

At last another MRI concert in the inner courtyard of Alte Karlsburg: On Tuesday, August 4th, Trio Mikado was playing Serenade G-Dur op. 141a by Max Reger. Before that we could listen toDivertimento B-Dur KV 439b Nr. 3 by Mozart and Variationen über „La ci darem la mano“ by Beethoven. The „distinguished culture of sound, even open air“ was appreciated by BNN. A wonderful evening for which we want to cordially thank Petar Hristov (Oboe), Yuria Otaki (Clarinet) and Lorenzo Calligaris (Bassoon).

On the death of Peter Serkin

On February 1st the 72-year old pianist Peter Serkin, son of Rudolf and Irene Serkin and grandson of Adolf Busch, passed away. Peter Serkin, born 1947 in Manhatten, was interpret of rarely performed works, contemporary music by Stefan Wolpe, Toru Takemitsu, Charles Wuorinen, Olivier Messiaen, Peter Lieberson and his grandfather Adolf Busch was in his repertoire as well as Bach, Mozart or music of the renaissance. He was an advocate for Regers and Adolf Buschs work. In the Reger-year 2016 he was the one did the most performances of Regers Piano Concerto in f Minor op. 114. Until the end, already heavily suffering from cancer, he was active as a pianist.

This manuscript was presented to the public on May 6th and Prof. Markus Becker (Hannover), who recorded the piano works of Reger, performed the piece.

	Reger-Werkausgabe II/8: Works for mixed choir a cappella I (1890–1902)

Published in July 2018 volume II/8 of Reger-Werkausgabe covers Regers works for mixed choir from 1890 to 1902. Included are contributions to catholic (Opus 61 and WoO VI/12, 19) as well as protestant (Opus 79f und WoO VI/17, which contains choral-based four-part movements sets for a whole church year) liturgical Gebrauchsmusik. Folk songs were not only tended to by secular (WoO VI/10, 11), but also by sacred (WoO VI/13, 14) contributions. The ambitous Drei Chöre op. 39 werededicated to renowned choir associations which were approaching professional levels. The comissioned work "Palmsonntagmorgen" WoO VI/18 can be seen as a transition to Regers later motets.

Out now: Max Reger, Requiem WoO V/9

Thomas Meyer-Fiebigs longtime studies of Regers Requiem WoO V/9 (1914) finally lead to a new edition of Regers unfinished work. With his intimate knowledge of Regers works Meyer-Fiebig tries to avoid a clash of styles and to act in the service of the composer with his completition of the Dies irae. While the first movement is edited in the style of a original text edition, a goal for the second movement was to come as close as possible to Reger without interfering too much.

Out now: Reger-Studien 10. Max Reger und das Lied. Tagungsbericht Karlsruhe 2015

Next to works for piano, songs play an important role in the oeuvre of Max Reger. He worked on them all over his life and composed around 300 songs with piano accompaniment. In 2015 Max-Reger-Institut organized an interdisciplinary conference on this still underrepresented part of Regers work. The conference combined historiographic and current questions and tackled a wide range of problems. Contributions by musicologists, germanists, computer scientists, one neuro scientist and musicians opened up a multitude of new perspectives.

Out now – Reger: The Centenary Collection

Exuberant and prolific, Max Reger composed an extraordinary volume and variety of works in his short life – he was just 43 when he died in 1916. Reger saw himself as an heir to Brahms, Schumann, Beethoven and Bach, while also drawing inspiration from Wagner and Liszt. The energy, richness, rapture and contrapuntal invention of his art is celebrated in this 8-CD collection of works for orchestra, chamber ensemble, piano, organ, choir and solo voice.

Just in time for the Reger-Year 2016 Breitkopf & Härtel published the Reger biography written by Susanne Popp. The comprehensive biography presents Regers prolific life on the basis of letters and documents, some of them practically unknown, which visually depict the restless life of the workaholic. Accompanying digital content can be found on maxreger.info.
